Stress can overpower us at any minute. It can flood our bodies with tension and cause anxiety we can’t control. It’s a scary thing so today I’m chatting about three ways we can deal with stress when life gets to be too much. They’re so simple you might already be practicing them but being aware of which techniques work best for you when you need to unwind is winning half the battle.
1. Do Nothing
Easier said than done right? Well, you know how after a yoga class the instructor has you lay on your mat with your eyes closed listening to soothing music? This is the same idea. Staring out an open window or laying peacefully on the couch taking deep breaths can relax your body and mind. It’s a way of quieting the world around you and if you visualize a happy place or have serene thoughts, it can bring you back to a calm state.
2. Sweat It Out
Elle Woods said it best, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” It’s as simple as that. I’ll admit lately I’ve been out of the exercise game but last year I was extremely committed to my regime. Not only did I see results but I loved the high I got after leaving the gym. I also got the best ideas while running on the treadmill and always felt daily frustrations lifted off my shoulders. Even heading for a walk will relieve stress hormones so it doesn’t have to be a rigorous workout!
3. Put On Some Music
Just like visualizing a happy place relieves tension, music has the same effect on us. How many times have you been transported to a past memory because you heard a particular song? I love putting on my wedding day song because I was in a state of pure bliss that day. Every time I hear it a surge of happiness overcomes me. But if I just need a break to de-stress, my hubby turned me onto this free app called “Relax Melodies” that you can download and combine different sounds for a relaxing ambience. My favorite combo right now is Ocean+Thunder+Eternity. I’ll put it on while I’m reading or even when I’m having trouble falling asleep.
The biggest thing to remember when overcome by stress and anxiety is that you’re more in control than you think. Sometimes doing something as small as one of these techniques can help you unwind and bring you back to a peaceful state. By doing so you can conquer the problem that’s causing you to stress out with a rational and calm mind.
