What to Wear to a Cinco …

Hola mis señoritas mas bonitas! Today we’re celebrating Cinco de Mayo a little early and chatting what to wear to a Cinco de Mayo fiesta if you’re heading to one (or two) this weekend. Being 100% Mexicana, my inner latina adores the deep rooted vibrancy and loud colors you find when you dive into traditional Mexican clothing. It goes beyond the big sombreros and mustache-inspired shirts and knick-knacks. Sure those are fun but if you want to be, shall we say, a little more subtle, an off-the-shoulder top will do the trick! Add beautiful embroidery or a simple flowy dress (like this one) and you’ll be ready to celebrate in true Mexican-inspired flair. Pom-poms are a huge trend right now so if you own any dresses or tops with this cute detail even better. read more

The Perfect Date Night Outfit

Greetings from Montréal! Or should I say bonjour? The hubs and I arrived on Thursday and we’re here because he’s playing in a hockey tournament. This is my second year coming with him and I always have such a great time. I gotta say so far Old Montréal is my favorite area because 1. the Notre Dame Basilica is just stunning and 2. the cobblestone roads are so cool and they’re getting me excited for Paris!

It’s funny I’m sharing this beautiful coral lace skirt today because I actually got it during last year’s Montréal visit. It’s from Zara but I found an almost identical one from White House Black Market (and it’s currently 30% off!). I’m completely embracing lace for spring right now. It’s no secret I’m obsessed with lace anything but there’s just something about the classic, romantic feeling lace gives to any piece of clothing that makes it the perfect date night outfit! Normally you’d find me in white lace but vibrant colors, like this coral pencil skirt, help bring a little spring and summer to any transitioning wardrobe. read more

Our 5 Year Wedding Anniversary

Today is our 5 year wedding anniversary and I really can’t believe it. The time has flown by and I find myself more in love with my husband than I’ve ever been. I ask myself (daily) what I did to deserve such a good man. I don’t know the answer but I thank my lucky stars our paths crossed 9 years ago.

I can truly go on and on and on about the wonderful man my husband is but I’m going to save that for him. He’s not really the mushy, post-it-on-social-media type anyway so I’ll respect that. read more

Best White Jeans (That Are Not …

You know that feeling you get when you find a pair of jeans that hug your curves in all the right places? They slip right on, button without effort and slim and lift where needed? I promise you that feeling is not a myth because I get that feeling these jeans! They’re the best white jeans and guess what? You don’t have to worry about wardrobe malfunctions because they are not see through! Not to mention they’re super flattering and smoothing where needed.

The thing about white jeans is that they’re an essential in every wardrobe, especially for spring and summer. They can be scary and maybe a little intimidating but they can work in your favor. A good pair of white jeans can break your blue denim rut and add some sophistication to your lunch and dinner dates. Depending on how you style them they can be casual or office-friendly and when you pair them with nude heels or wedges, they can really elongate your legs which is a plus for shorties like me. read more

Trend to Try: Wide Leg Pants

TGIF! We made it! This week was a blur filled with exciting news (did you catch my new partnership on Insta?) and work, work, work! I also had a couple of meetings where I wanted to look chic-y deeky and I couldn’t help but gravitate toward wide leg pants – gosh I love this trend! You’d think because I’m short this trend wouldn’t be flattering but I actually think it helps me look taller – or is that just wishful thinking? #shortgirlproblems. Regardless, it’s definitely a must-have if you want to take your work wear to the next level. read more

Casual Spring Weekend Outfit + 3 Things I’…

Ah Monday, we meet again and this time, I’m actually happy to see you. This week I’ve got something really fun I’ve been waiting, what seems like, forever to share with you all. Keep your eyes on my Insta because you’re gonna love it!

Another thing I know you’re going to love? Pairing distressed jeans with duster jackets for a casual spring weekend outfit. I’ve styled this olive duster so many times on the blog (find the looks here and here) and that’s because it’s one of my favorite ways to “chic-up” an outfit. I love throwing leggings and a sweatshirt on as much as the next girl but sometimes they can be too casual. This simple weekend outfit works because the boyfriend jeans are not restrictive and the duster jacket is a light, flowy fabric that moves with you and doesn’t fit too tight. Everything about this outfit says you’re in chill mode and ready to enjoy your weekend plans. read more

Easter Sunday Outfit

My family has a tradition of heading to the park for Easter Sunday after mass. We make ceviche (raw shrimp marinated in lime juice and served on a tostada – so yummy!) and hide Easter eggs for the kiddos around the park. It’s one of my favorite traditions, and I looked forward to it every year when I lived in Arizona. I would always be so extra and dress up in my best Easter Sunday outfit – even if it was just to lounge on a lawn chair in the sun.

This dress screamed Easter to me, and I had to snag it when I saw it at Forever 21. The blush color is calming and the fit and fabric lend itself for the unpredictable April weather. I can even see this being a great dress to wear over a bathing suit as a coverup since it simply unties around the waist. read more

5 Keys to Success from Top Entrepreneurs

Trying to build something out of nothing is a very daunting task. The will, the passion, the courage all have to be there, and they have to be greater than your desire to quit when times get tough. And times will get tough. More often than not you’ll hear “no” rather than “yes” and people will dismiss your work before praising it. Especially if you’re new and trying to prove your worth.

This past weekend I got the chance to attend a Power Brunch in NYC. The panelists included top entrepreneurs in the food, blogging, fitness, beauty even tea industry. They shared their journey, struggles and accomplishments and gave us tons of real-life advice on how they found success. There were so many good points made but a few kept coming up so I thought I’d share with you, what I’ve dawned, 5 keys to success from top entrepreneurs. read more

Friday Favorites 4.7.17 + GIVEAWAY (Closed)

It’s been a slow week around the blog and that’s because it’s been a crazy week in real life. If you follow me on Instagram (or read this post) then you know we’ve been searching for a new apartment. We love the place we have now but it’s too far from my husband’s job (he has a four hour commute – two hours each way!). Bless his heart. But we finally settled on a place {cue the confetti} and I’m pretty excited about it. I’m the type of person who likes to turn every stone before making a decision, which is good (and sometimes really bad), and finally I just let go and went with the place that felt the most home-y. read more

Pop of Color to Brighten Your …

Sometimes all you need is a pop of color to brighten your day! Lately I’ve been trying to step outside my comfort zone when it comes to my style. I’ve had the urge (several times) to just purge my closet and start fresh because most of it doesn’t reflect my style anymore. I have a few pieces I wear and re-wear because I feel comfortable in them but for the most part I stare at my closet and see Ilse circa 2014. Has that ever happened to you?

In a lot of ways it’s synonymous with what’s happening in my life right now. Slowly who I am and what’s important to me has been shifting, and I’m growing to be more accepting, loving and comfortable in my skin. I focus less on what people think because life is short, and living a happy life that is true to you is what’s really important. Kinda like a pop of color! You guys know by now I’m a neutral girl but when there are a lot of moving pieces in life, a pop of color in your wardrobe is the easiest way to brighten your day. read more
