As you can tell I’m a bit of a minimalist when it comes to fashion; Too much jewelry or lots of competing pieces can overwhelm my 5’1 frame. That’s why my favorite thing to do when putting together an outfit is letting one piece be the main focus, in this case over-the-knee boots!
It took me a long time to find the perfect pair and while I do love the sweetness behind little white dresses for date nights, it’s also nice to rev it up a bit, especially with Valentine’s Day this weekend. Because it’s been freezing these last couple of days (I def jinxed it in my previous post) I thought I’d share with you my favorite way to add a bit of sexiness to an otherwise simple outfit.
These boots show just enough skin but still help keep me warm. Pairing them with a simple, long-sleeve dress really keeps the look uniformed and classic, the perfect look for date night or girl’s night out!
Statement pieces, like these boots, are my favorite to play with. Just this past weekend I wore the same pair of boots to a Super Bowl party. I had a basic shirt, jeans and a baseball cap on (If you follow me on Instagram you probably saw a pic). They work on so many different looks but each time they’re the focus.
While I’m not a huge believer in rules when it comes to fashion or makeup, here are a few things to remember about statement pieces:
- Don’t let them overpower you: While you want them to garner attention, don’t let them become all people see. They should elevate your style and make a simple outfit stand out.
- Let them showcase your personality: For some women a great bag is all they need to take their outfit to the next level, for others it might be a pop of color. Whatever it may be, let it reflect who you are and don’t just choose an item to follow a trend.
- Statement pieces can make the rest of your clothes look expensive: For me these boots were an investment because I know I’m going to be wearing them for a long time. The dress I’m wearing? Under $25! Investing in certain pieces that you know you’ll recycle for years to come is a great way to build a solid wardrobe. Same goes with a nice bag or even salon trips (because hair can get expense and can also become what people know you by (remember The Rachel?). If you can score a quality statement piece for cheap, even better!
Will you be rocking a statement piece for Valentine’s Day? My hubs and I haven’t made specific plans but these boots are a big contender! Let me know below what’s your favorite statement piece in your closet!
