I’m not a lipstick junkie; I indulge in neutral eyeshadow palettes, that’s where all my money goes! So when these lipsticks launched I said, “ooh, pretty!,” glanced at the price tag, but couldn’t bring myself to purchase just yet.
Then came my $20 Sephora rewards card in the mail, and I asked myself what luxe item would I dread paying full price for (but really really want) and these pretty little things came to mind.
LAUNCHED: Fall 2014
PRICE: $32 for 0.14 oz.
WHERE TO PURCHASE IN UNITED STATES: NARS Counters and Online, Sephora, Barney’s, Nordstrom, Saks, Bloomingdale’s
HOW MANY SHADES: 40, with specific shades only available at certain retailers
CLAIMS: “The innovative, pigment-rich formula delivers an intense, full-coverage finish in a single stroke, while nutrient rich ingredients are known to smooth, moisturize and volumes.”
Brigitte is described as a “nude rose” but on me it pulls more peach than nude. I have a feeling this will become my go-to shade come spring.
Anita is described as “antique rose” and I agree. I tried the very popular “Anna” at first but ended up choosing “Anita” because I found it less deep and more wearable for every day on me. It’s become my “my lips but better” shade; It’s perfect for any look.
The first thing that caught my attention about these lippies was the sleek and magnetic packaging. It’s quite perfect when you think about it; It’s elegant, understated, but in the right light you see the embossed NARS logo. I love it.
But besides the packaging, NARS claims a “full-coverage finish” with these lipsticks. I’ve only tried two shades, Brigitte and Anita, and when I apply them I do get opaque coverage; And I truly get the color I see in the tube which is important when you’re paying so much for one lipstick. This is especially impressive considering the shades I picked are on the nude side and those colors tend to have less color pay-off which is not the case here. I think women with highly pigmented lips will find these to be a dream come true because for once their lip color won’t rival the shade of the lipstick.
The only thing I found difficult to work with was the formula; It’s not smudge-proof so I have to be careful after I apply it. Because I chose shades more on the nude side I don’t find this to be a big deal, but I would worry about this with the deeper shades (I’m curious to know if any of you have issues with this?). Aside from this, the wear is extremely comfortable; so much so I forget I’m wearing lipstick.
WORTH THE HYPE?
NARS is perhaps one of my favorite cosmetic brands; They have a modern approach to their branding without losing the allure of classic and feminine touches. They simply get it when it comes to the quality and presentation we expect from their products.
With that being said I think the $32 price tag is encompassing of many things: the packaging, texture, but especially the name and formula.
If you want to feel true luxe on your lips, these lipsticks are for you. I definitely feel über fancy when I apply them and even though my shades are perfect “every day colors,” I tend to save them for special occasions.
The price? I guess I get it but I still think they’re a little pricey for me at this time; That’s why I waited for a sale. I can’t say I’m ready to drop $32 on a lipstick just yet but if I could, I’d definitely pick up more colors (Carmen, Vivien, Raquel.. I’m looking at you).
Overall the shades I chose wear comfortably on my lips and give me beautiful, highly pigmented color; I get about 3-4 hours of wear time. I’m curious to try the darker shades but with spring around the corner I think the colors I chose will be perfect.
