One thing I’ve always poked fun at my husband for is wearing things out of the store. As soon as he buys a shirt or shoes, he pulls off the tags and puts on his new threads. It makes me laugh how excited he gets to wear them and I never understood why he just didn’t wait.
I’ve always been the opposite. I buy something and save it for a special occasion. I’ll save the pretty dress or won’t use my favorite foundation (because it’s pricey!) or I’ll only wear a certain fragrance on nights out.
I have lived my whole life doing things this way until last year.
Last May we moved into the apartment we’re in now. I was brutal in the way I decided what to keep and what to throw out. We downsized big time so I didn’t want to bring with me unnecessary stuff I hadn’t used in years. In the process of sorting things out, I also realized how many of my things were untouched and brand new because I was saving them for a special occasion. Good stuff too! Candles I love never burned and tons of blouses still with tags on.
I don’t know if it was the overpowering feeling of a fresh start but it really bugged me that I hadn’t been enjoying my “stuff.” I was saving them for some indeterminate special day that may never come.

It’s such a cheesy and cliché thing to say, but it really sunk in how little time we have and how it’s up to us to make every moment feel like a special one. Things don’t have to be extravagant; they can be small things like drinking my Spindrifts out of a wine glass! I have an aunt who actually does this. She drinks her orange juice out of a wine glass in the morning because she says it makes her feel fancy. I didn’t get it then when she told me that but I totally get it now! So cheers tia! 😉
The truth is we all deserve a little fancy in our lives. Now more than ever I live for cherishing the ordinary days. I think it’s important to honor those special moments and celebrations but I also believe sitting on the couch with my husband and dog is a pleasure not many get so why not burn that special candle and add to the moment?
It’s time to treat yourself well every day. If you love something, use it. Your good bottle of perfume will not be wasted running errands! Who knows, you might get an unexpected compliment on the beautiful scent that turns your whole day around or it just might add an extra pep in your step. We live in a very casual world and we’re constantly on to the next thing on our to-do list. I say next time you have to write something down, pick up your fancy pens and add a little luxe to an ordinary task.
What’s your take on this subject? I would love to hear your thoughts below!
Until the next post my loves!
