When I moved from Arizona to Connecticut I literally had no clue what I was getting myself into, weather-wise that is. I didn’t own one single heavy coat and forget about a good pair of boots. My winter wardrobe basics were seriously slacking and I definitely felt the brrr once I had to go through my first winter.
That’s why today I’m sharing a list of 10 winter basics I wish I owned before I moved to CT. They’re not only going to keep you warm, but they’ll also help you look good when dealing with bitter winters. They’re great foundations for a classic wardrobe that will serve you well for a long time.

When choosing basics, go with neutral colors like camel, gray, navy, white and black. You also want to choose clean lines and timeless silhouettes that flatter your body type. This is also the time to invest! These winter wardrobe basics will be the pieces you pull out season after season to serve as foundation staples even when styles change. If I’m having a hard time deciding if the item is worth it, I always like to ask myself if it’s functional yet stylish.
I went ahead and picked three options for my 10 winter basics that are classic and work to create a cohesive look.
Thick or thermal leggings
Cable-knit midi skirt/sweater
Classic black & white sweater
Comfy knee-high boots
What are your must-have winter wardrobe basics? I’d love to hear what your staples are!
