Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day my friends! Here at casa McDonnell, we’ve been super focused on getting things ready for our baby girl that we haven’t had much time for anything else lately. If my husband isn’t building something, I’m organizing something else. But isn’t that how life goes? Our attention and energy go to the things we’re either so excited about or need to get done. With our focus on getting our home ready, it’s left little time for us. And forget about solo time. I don’t remember the last time I did something that wasn’t connected to work or getting ready for baby.
In order to keep going, you gotta take a break! If you’re burning both ends, well, you’re gonna burn out! That’s why today I’m sharing simple ways to treat yourself this Valentine’s Day (and every day!). I’m taking a cue from my book and will be doing some of these tips myself because a little “me” time is sounding good right about now.
what I’m wearing
Get a mani or pedi
I get manicures pretty regularly but never a pedi. The other day I decided to get one done and it was the highlight of my day! My swollen, preggo feet definitely needed it and I was able to zen out for a bit. Whatever your “maintenance” routine includes, go the extra mile next time you have an appointment and give yourself a treat whether it be a massage or a facial to help you look and feel good.
Check in with yourself
It’s so important to check in with yourself every now and again to make sure everything you’re doing is still serving its original purpose – and is making you happy. It’s very easy to get sidetracked and start doing things that don’t really serve you simply because someone asked (check this post out if that’s you) or you’re a yes person (you’re going to want to read this post if you just nodded your head). Before you know it, you’ve overworked yourself and have lost sight of why you started.
Take the morning or afternoon to write down what’s taking up all your time and energy and figure out if it’s still important to you. Does it bring you happiness? If you realize somewhere along the way you took a wrong time then now is the time to change and re-focus yourself.
That thing you never have time to do anymore? Do it!
Something you guys might not know about me is that I used to dance. I LOVE to dance. It’s truly one of the things that light me up. But it’s been years since I’ve danced a choreographed routine. My hope is to take classes to get back into shape after baby and honestly to fuel that piece of me that I’ve let go.
Whatever that might be for you, take a day and plan to fully immerse yourself in that thing you used to love to do but don’t have the time to do anymore. You’ll be surprised what parts of you come alive just by revisiting an old love.
Pamper sesh, anyone?
Sorry not sorry for adding this to my “treat yourself” list but honestly, is there anything better than pampering yourself? I can’t think of many things.
I’m a hair treatment-all-the-face-masks-soak-feet-in-bath-salts-light-a-candle-kinda girl when it comes to pampering sessions but do whatever helps you feel good. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money but it’ll make all the difference.
Literally “treat yourself”
You might be shocked to find out I’m not really a “spender” – and my husband can vouch for that. I’m all about the deals and rarely buy anything full price. So when I do, it’s truly like I’m treating myself.
My thing lately has been luxe lipsticks. I don’t know why but I’ve fallen in love with gorgeously-ornate packaging and really enjoy buying them. That would be what I would treat myself with.
Whether you love wine, shoes, a nice piece of jewelry, go for it! Within your means, of course! And treat yourself because you deserve it.
I would love to know how you find ways to treat yourself on Valentine’s Day (and every day) and if you have any special plans? My husband and I are going to dinner and a movie because while it might be predictable, we won’t be having many of those any time soon once baby girl is here.
Happy Wednesday loves!
