It’s natural that around the winter months we tend to go vampy with our looks and opt for darker, mauvey hues. But when I start feeling the warm tinge of spring telling me we’re leaving winter, my brain can’t help but yell, “Where are my corals?! My bronzers?! And for goodness sake’s give me anything floral!” And this year I am so ready for that!
Today I’m sharing seven beauty tips to go from winter to spring with ease! It’s my little way of welcoming the change in weather through different makeup looks.
1. Foundation Change-Up
I cake it on during winter. Okay fine, I always cake it on! That’s because I’m a lover of full coverage foundations. But during the spring and summer months it’s nice to give your skin a break and let it breathe. Generally we’re all a little tanner and our skin’s got that healthy glow going on so it’s the perfect time to introduce a tinted moisturizer and/or BB cream to our daily routines. These products will help blur a few of our imperfections and bring moisture back into our skin. I’m a fan of Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream and L’oreal’s Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream. If you’re not ready to let go of your full coverage foundations, a little trick that works wonderfully for my oily skin is mixing a luminizing primer (like L’oreal Magic Lumi Primer) with my matte foundation to give me a radiant finish. I still wear a mattifying primer underneath but trust me when I say you get the best of both worlds by doing this.
2. Rethink your Skincare Routine
Just like we go sheerer with our foundations, we should opt for lighter creams as well. Winter is harsh and the heavier and more moisturizing the cream the better but there’s really no need for that during spring. Switch up your daytime moisturizer for a lighter one and always apply SPF (something that shouldn’t change even during winter). Look for multi-purpose products so you don’t have to pack on too much on your face as well.
3. Switch from Powders to Creams
In general cream products give you a more natural appearance. They’re meant to melt with the warmth of your fingers and deliver a nice fusion between the product and your skin. I’ve always been iffy about cream products but recently I’ve been trying cream blushes and I have to say they’re wonderful. The trick is not to place them on top of your powders because as we all know this will cause the products to break up. If you’re using a tinted moisturizer as your base, applying a cream blush will add a healthy flush of color to your cheeks; Stains work in the same manner.
4. Skip the Dark Lip Hues
You can wear whatever color your heart desires during each season but for me it’s instinctual to lean toward vibrant shades or sheer finishes; Think oranges, pinks and corals. Spring months reignite my love for glosses too. I’ve been all about the matte lip trend but there’s something about the warmer weather that makes me want to have juicy looking lips!
5. Go from Black Eyeliner to Brown
On most days I won’t wear eyeliner at all but when I feel my eyes need something extra I opt for brown; That’s because wearing black eyeliner during the day is too intense for me, especially during spring. My favorite eyeliner to wear is Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On pencil in ‘Smog.’ It’s the perfect bronzey liner that will make everyone’s eyes twinkle in the sun.
6. Bronzer
Can I get an “amen” when I say this year is panning out to be the year of the contour?? Kits are popping up left and right promising to give us the perfect chiseled face and I ain’t mad at it but that’s too much for every day spring makeup, at least for me. My favorite alternative? Bronzer! There are many finishes available and I like to apply both matte and shimmery during spring. First, I’ll quickly swipe my matte bronzer on the areas normally meant for contouring with a large brush like the e.l.f Complexion Brush (more info on this brush and other e.l.f favorites HERE). This will give me some definition and add warmth to my skin. Second, I like to go in with my shimmery bronzer and apply it on my cheeks to add color and glow; A great one is LORAC TANtalizer Baked Bronzer (amazing for all-over body shimmer too). The amount is really preference but I prefer a light hand.
7. Bye, Bye Musky Scents
Cozy and deep scents are meant for winter months, not spring. Some women have a signature scent they wear year round but for me I love to switch it up. Anything fresh and floral takes center stage on my vanity for quick sprays before heading out the door.
So there you have it; Slight changes that make all the difference when transitioning your winter beauty routine to spring. Leave me a comment below letting me know your tips and tricks!
