There’s not many events I like to get ready for more than date night. Busy schedules often leave my hubby and I opting for re-runs of Breaking Bad and indulging in take-out pizza (which let’s be honest we love doing) but when we get a chance to actually head out it’s such a treat. Even if you’re not married and it might be the first date or you’ve been dating several months, there’s always a bit of excitement in the air, and after primping for hours you want to feel like Rachael Leigh Cook in She’s All That when she slo-mo’s down the stairs to “Kiss Me” with Freddie Prinze Jr. anxiously waiting for her reveal.
Because ladies, primpin’ ain’t easy.. amiright? And for me date night always adds extra steps to my beauty routine that normally I don’t do. It’s a special night after all, and I treat it that way. I’ve shared with you my clutch essentials for special occasions but with the biggest date night of the year tomorrow (no pressure), I thought I’d let you in on what I do to get date night ready.
THE PREP: When I’m preparing for a big date night I usually start thinking about my skin, makeup look, and outfit days before the date. I’ll use a face mask I know won’t irritate or cause my skin to break out. One of my favorites is Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque; It’s affordable and my skin feels so clean afterwards, or I’ll pick up a mask from LUSH; Right now I’m loving Oatifix and Love Lettuce because they help with dry, flaky skin. If I don’t have much time I’ll use Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate to give me a bright, smooth canvas for makeup application later; I highly recommend this product. I’ll also paint my nails the night before that way when I take a bath any polish that ended up on the skin surrounding my nail comes off with the warm water. I have two nail colors I always go for: Essie’s Spin the Bottle or OPI’s Red.. it all depends on the mood.
SO FRESH & SO CLEAN: If time allows I LOVE taking baths before date nights. If it’s the first date this is the perfect time to de-stress and relax a bit. Before getting into the tub I’ll apply the same mask I did a few days before and pour my favorite bubble bath. I’ll also turn on Pandora (the Frank Sinatra or R&B Love Songs stations usually do the trick).
After soaking in the tub I’ll rinse off and exfoliate with my favorite body scrub, Tree Hut Shea Sugar Brazilian Nut Body Scrub (smells AH-mazing) and use True Blue Spa Silky Smooth Shave Cream for a close shave. Afterwards I love using a body wash that compliments the fragrance I’ll be wearing that night and top it off with Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner which is a rose-scented shower ‘lotion’ that makes my body feel hydrated and silky smooth.
THE MAKEUP: Deciding what look I’m going for all depends on the activity my hubs and I have planned. If it’s a candlelight dinner I definitely play up the glowy skin and shimmery shadows (which is what I’ll be doing for Valentine’s Day). I also love to draw his attention to my lips so even though gloss is my fave and he doesn’t mind it, I opt for stains or matte lipsticks (L’oreal has some super affordable kiss-proof formulas I love). My ideal date night makeup is something that doesn’t overpower my features but rather enhances them so you normally won’t find me wearing heavy makeup but I do recommend lashes! You’ll be staring at each other’s eyes the entire night so lashes are a must for me. I recently tried For the Love of Lashes and have fallen in love with their “Vixen” style, which is exactly how you should feel during your date!
THE OUTFIT: Again, this depends on what we have planned for the night. If we’re headed to the movie theater than obviously I dress comfortably but if it’s a special dinner I definitely wear a curve hugging dress. For the most part if I’m showing leg I’m covered up top and vice versa. I love leaving something to the imagination.. yes even after being married, but every now and then I break my own rules (like on Valentine’s Day) and spice things up. If this is the first date I’d recommend wearing something you feel comfortable in. This isn’t the time to experiment with new styles or heels you’re not used to. Wear the color you know makes your eye color pop or choose that LBD that’s a showstopper. I know we sometimes have the urge to go shopping for date nights but if he’s never seen you in your go-to outfit wear it, and own it!
From prepping to products I hope you found some ideas on how to get ready for date night! I’d love to hear what extra steps you add to your beauty routine when getting ready!? And don’t forget to hit all your pulse points with your favorite perfume before heading out the door!
Besos (and Happy Valentine’s Day!)
