Highlighters are one of my favorite makeup products. They have the ability to brighten your complexion in an instant and help dull skin appear healthy (if only for the day).
Even if you have oily skin (like me), you can mattify your skin with a matte foundation then add the glow where you want it with a highlighter.
A while back I did a guide on choosing the perfect highlighter for your skin tone (available HERE), so today I thought I’d chat about my current collection and which highlighters I reach for depending on how strong I want my glow and the occasion.
My collection includes (clockwise) : Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette, BECCA Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector in ‘Opal’, MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting Duo in ‘2 Golden’, KIKO Cosmetics Water Eyeshadow in ‘208’, theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer, and MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in ‘Soft and Gentle.’
HIGHLIGHTERS & SWATCHES
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette: This palette gives by far the most subtle finish out of all my highlighters; Some might call them finishing powders but it really all depends on the shade. When used correctly they definitely give the skin a nice sheen and work to give the skin a healthy appearance. The palette comes with three shades (Dim Light, Incandescent Light, and Radiant Light). I use Dim for an all over finishing powder on “no makeup” days, Incandescent for a highlight on minimal makeup days, and Radiant as a subtle bronzer.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting Duo in ‘2 Golden’: This duo comes with two shades, a “bronzer” and a highlight. I mainly use the highlight since the bronzer side is too orange for me. When applied, it is a very obvious gold highlight, just slightly deeper and a tad more rose gold when compared to KIKO eyeshadow in ‘208.’ It also tends to have bigger chunks of glitter than the KIKO shadow. I love using it when I have a bronze, rose gold and matte warm eye looks.
KIKO Cosmetics Water Eyeshadow in ‘208’: Intended as an eyeshadow, KIKO’s ‘208’ is a great dupe for MUFE’s #2 duo. I use them interchangeable and get the same great color pay-off.
BECCA Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector in ‘Opal’: Compared to Mary-Lou and ‘Soft and Gentle,” ‘Opal’ is a peachy champagne shade with a stronger gold tone than silver. It’s extremely opaque and striking so if you want to GLOW then this highlighter is for you. I use it day and night but if you’re just starting with highlighters I’d try it out one evening to see how you like it.
theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer: This highlighter is more of a muted gold champagne color with no pink. I’d say this is my go-to highlighter above all others because it works with pretty much every eye look. Even if I’m wearing minimal makeup, this highlighter helps my skin radiate and appear healthy.
MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in ‘Soft and Gentle’: If you’ve never owned a highlighter I’d suggest purchasing this one first; this is a soft pink champagne shade with a combination of both gold and silver shimmer. It’s a classic among highlighters because it’s not too strong and it’s not too subtle. You can sweep a bit on the top of your cheekbones for a light sheen or you can build it up for a more obvious highlight.
What does your collection look like? And which highlighters are you currently coveting?
I’m dying to get my hands on the BECCA Cosmetics and Youtuber Jaclyn Hill collaboration Shimmering Skin Perfector in ‘Champagne Pop!‘ It looks like it’s going to be suitable for many skin types!
